The Impact of Job Stress and Life Events Stress on Depression among Employees

Abstract
The social and medical cost for treating depression has been rapidly increasing in South Korea. There is a need to examine prevalence of depression among employees and build knowledge how to develop effective prevention strategies. Previous research from western countries indicated the impact of life events stress on depression among employees. To our knowledge, there is also few study comparing the impact of job stress and that of life events stress on depression among employees. This study attempted to explore the impact of job stress and life events stress, and other relevant variables on depression among employees. 752 participants were recruited out of workplace residing Seoul and Gyonggi Province, 687 questionnaires were used for the final analyses. Results of hierarichical multiple regression analysis demonstrated that being female, poor health status, night shift, low job satisfaction were found to be positively associated with depression. Life events stress was found to be stronger predictor of depression than job stress was. Discussions and implications were addressed based on these findings.
